CCI Approves Merger of Reliance and Disney Media Assets, Will Compete With These Major Streaming Companies

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the merger of media assets owned by Reliance Industries and the Walt Disney Company. Following this merger, Reliance's media empire will be valued at approximately ₹70,000 crore.

The deal, initially announced six months ago, underwent intense scrutiny by the anti-trust regulator. During this period, several amendments were made to the agreement by the parties involved. The CCI's approval was granted only after these amendments were implemented.

New entity to compete with major streaming companies

Post-merger, Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, will hold the majority stake in the newly formed venture. This new entity is set to compete with major streaming companies such as Sony, Netflix, and Amazon. It will also gain broadcasting rights to most sporting events in India, including significant cricket tournaments.

The merger is expected to be completed within the next six months. Nita Ambani, wife of Mukesh Ambani, will serve as the chairperson of the new venture.
