Kolkata Horror: Nirbhaya's mother slams Mamata Banerjee amidst nationwide protests and reactions

Protests by doctors continue to sweep across the country in response to the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. This shocking incident has drawn widespread outrage, echoing the intensity of past protests like those seen during the 2012 Delhi gang rape case.

Asha Devi, the mother of the 2012 Delhi gangrape victim, also known as 'Nirbhaya', has voiced her strong reaction to this tragic event. In 2012, mass protests erupted across India, and the victim was given the name 'Nirbhaya', symbolizing her bravery in the face of brutality. Now, Asha Devi has spoken out, particularly criticizing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's handling of the situation.

"Such a heinous act happened to her (trainee doctor) where she was doing her work. If she is not safe in the hospital where she is on duty, then what can we think about ordinary girls and women?" she questioned.

Asha Devi accused Mamata Banerjee of attempting to divert public attention by leading protests, despite holding significant power to address the issue directly. Banerjee recently led a rally demanding the death penalty for those responsible for the trainee doctor's murder.

However, Asha Devi questioned the purpose of Banerjee's protests, stating, "The health ministry is under the chief minister, the police come under her, the law is there—so against whom is she protesting? From whom is she demanding the death penalty? The law is in her hands. At least the case should be brought to the lower court in a clean manner."

Asha Devi also condemned the incidents of vandalism at RG Kar Hospital, where protestors and medical students reportedly faced threats. She expressed concern over the safety of the students, especially the female students, who were allegedly told by mobs that they could meet the same fate as the murdered doctor.

Reflecting on the broader issue of women's safety in India, Asha Devi remarked, "A lot has changed in the country, but if something has not changed, it is the incidents of rape against women. I don't think anything has been done for the safety of women. Laws and fast track courts have been established, but nothing has truly changed."

Centre's Directive to All States

In response to the nationwide protests and escalating tension, the Central Government has issued a directive to all states, mandating the submission of regular reports on the law and order situation every two hours. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed state police forces across the country to send updates via mail, fax, or WhatsApp.

According to the notification, the MHA emphasized the importance of closely monitoring the situation, stating.

This directive underscores the seriousness with which the Central Government is treating the incident and the subsequent protests. As the situation continues to evolve, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice and a meaningful change in the protection of women across the country.
