MP: Doctors' strike in protest against Kolkata doctor rape incident increases patients' troubles


Bhopal: In protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, more than 20 thousand doctors of government and other private hospitals including AIIMS in Madhya Pradesh went on strike and demonstrated wearing black bands on Friday. 


In Bhopal, doctors in AIIMS, Hamidia have stopped working since Thursday night. Due to this, patients had to face troubles on Friday. In Indore, junior doctors have decided to see only emergency cases. Patients are facing a lot of trouble due to the strike in Jabalpur, Chhindwara, Gwalior, Ratlam, Raisen, Mandsaur, Satna, Rewa too. Meanwhile, the strike matter has reached the Jabalpur High Court.


Petition filed in HC


In protest against the Kolkata incident, the striking doctors are demanding security in hospitals. Meanwhile, Narsinghpur petitioner Anshul Tiwari has said in a PIL filed in Jabalpur High Court that Madhya Pradesh has nothing to do with the Kolkata incident, yet doctors have gone on strike. This is causing problems to patients and their families. Health services have been halted for the last 5 days, although OPD services are running in 90 percent of hospitals, but general diseases are not being treated. 


Tiwari said that due to the strike, health services have started deteriorating in most government hospitals. Patients are lining up for treatment. Pathology tests are not being done. Families are worried. 


Medicos gave a message through a play


Meanwhile, on Friday, during the strike in Hamidia Hospital, junior doctors gave a message against atrocities against women through a play. A lady doctor recited poet Pushyamitra Upadhyay's poem Ab Govind Na Aayenge through acting. 


In the three major hospitals of the capital, AIIMS, Hamidia and Gandhi Medical College, doctors belonging to IMA have continued their protest in the campus by tying black bands against the Kolkata incident. Due to the strike by junior doctors and senior resident doctors, patients are having to stand in long queues. 


More than 250 junior doctors of Hamidia Hospital have stopped working from 12 midnight on Thursday night. Dr. Rakesh Malviya, the main convener of the Government Autonomous Doctors' Federation of Madhya Pradesh, claimed that in this protest, more than 20 thousand doctors, including government and private doctors, have gone on strike from across the state.


Preparations to call medical interns on duty


To deal with the strike in Bhopal, Gandhi Medical College (GMC) Dean Dr. Kavita N Singh has issued orders to cancel the leave of all doctors and to remain on duty for 24 hours. Along with this, instructions have been given to the heads of all departments to deploy medical teachers in emergency, OPD, operation theatre, wards. In the order, it has been asked to deploy medical interns as well if needed. A report on its implementation has also been sought from the professors of all departments.


Dr. Anoop Hajela, President, Association of Health Care Providers of India (MP Chapter), Bhopal said there is a demand to implement the National Doctors Protectio Act across the country. The draft of this act has been prepared, which is pending in the Union Home Ministry. Currently, different Doctors Protection Acts have been made in some states, which have been implemented by the respective state governments. Doctors Protection Act is in force in Madhya Pradesh. Still, doctors are demanding protection so that an incident like Kolkata does not happen.
