The parents of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have informed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that they suspect multiple interns and physicians from the hospital may be involved in the crime, according to a CBI officer on Friday.
The grieving parents provided the CBI with the names of individuals they believe were involved in their daughter's tragic death. The CBI has been tasked with investigating the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
"The parents have expressed their suspicion that several individuals may have played a role in the sexual assault and murder of their daughter. They have named certain interns and doctors who worked alongside her at the hospital," a CBI officer shared with the media.
In response, the CBI has prioritized questioning these individuals, as well as officers from the Kolkata Police who were initially involved in the investigation.
At least 30 suspects identified
"We have identified at least 30 suspects and have already begun questioning them," the CBI officer added.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the CBI has summoned a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who were on duty the night the doctor was raped and murdered. Additionally, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, has been brought in for questioning. Dr. Ghosh resigned just two days after the woman's body was discovered, citing concerns for his safety and seeking protection from the Calcutta High Court. The court directed him to approach a single Bench for further assistance.
CBI reconstructed the crime scene
In an effort to reconstruct the crime scene, the CBI had the arrested accused, a civic volunteer, walk through the seminar hall of the hospital where the victim's body was found on August 9, using advanced 3D technology.
HC Criticizes State Response to Vandalism at RG Kar Medical College
On August 16, the Calcutta High Court expressed concern over the inadequate preventive measures in place to address the vandalism that occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on the night of August 14. The Bench remarked, “If 7,000 people are to gather, it is hard to believe the State police were unaware. Such a large crowd cannot simply appear without notice. This represents a significant failure of State machinery.”
24-hour nationwide strike on Aug 17
In response to the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency and outpatient department (OPD) services on August 17. The organization is advocating for justice for the victim and is demanding the establishment of a central law to safeguard healthcare workers. Following this call, medical professionals from both public and private health facilities have joined protests across the country.
Dr. R.V. Asokan, the IMA chief, criticized the health ministry's decision to form a panel to discuss a central law for protecting healthcare workers, describing it as “too little and too late.”
Committed to uncovering the truth: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused opposition parties, namely the CPI(M) and the BJP, of instigating vandalism at RG Kar Hospital and attempting to distort the truth surrounding the rape and murder case.
"We are committed to uncovering the truth, but certain factions are spreading misinformation to mislead the public. Fake news is being circulated on social media to obscure the facts. We condemn these actions and demand that the culprits be brought to justice," Banerjee stated during a rally.
BJP slams leaders of the opposition bloc INDIA
In response, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia criticized leaders of the opposition bloc INDIA, accusing them of selective outrage over crimes against women based on political convenience. Bhatia labeled Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Manish Sisodia, Uddhav Thackeray, and other leaders of the INDIA bloc as "political vultures" who exploit such incidents for political gain. He urged them to rise above vote-bank politics and "break their silence" on such heinous crimes.
"This silence will be costly for the INDIA bloc. These individuals are not true leaders but political vultures who only speak out on crimes against women when it suits their agenda," Bhatia asserted, adding that the law and order situation in Bengal has deteriorated.
With the case now under CBI jurisdiction, Bhatia expressed confidence that all those responsible would face the harshest punishment, regardless of any political protection they might have.
The incident has sparked nationwide protests among medical students and professionals, who are demanding legislation to ensure safety in hospitals and workplaces for medical staff.
