Paris Olympics-2024: Decision on Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification Postponed Until This Date; What Arguments Were Presented in Support of Vinesh?

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has delayed its ruling on the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat at the Paris Olympics-2024. The final decision will be announced on August 16 at 9:30 PM.

The case was heard by the Arbitration Court on August 9, with Vinesh Phogat participating virtually. On August 6, Phogat had advanced to the finals in the 50 kg weight category, making history as the first Indian woman to do so. This achievement guaranteed her at least a silver medal in wrestling.

However, just hours later, Phogat faced disqualification for exceeding the approved weight limit. Following this development, she refrained from commenting on the situation but later announced her retirement from wrestling on August 8 via the social media platform X.

Before the final match, Vinesh was disqualified due to being 100 grams overweight, while in the weigh-in done before the preliminary round, Vinesh was below the prescribed limit of 50 kg weight category. In such a situation, Vinesh demanded a joint silver medal.

The argument put forward in Vinesh's favour was that 100 grams of weight is nominal. It is not more than 0.1% to 0.2% of the athlete's weight. It can also easily increase due to the swelling of the human body in the summer season. This is due to the human need to survive. More water naturally gets accumulated in the body in summer season.

The CAS was told that Vinesh had to fight 3 competitions in a single day. During this time, she also had to eat to maintain energy. In such a situation, her weight had reached 52.7 kg.

Due to the distance between the sports village and the Olympic Games arena and continuous matches on the first day, Vinesh did not get enough time to lose weight.

Senior advocate Harish Salve represented Vinesh on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
