A regional turboprop aircraft carrying 62 passengers crashed near São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board, according to local officials at the crash site.
Social media footage showed showed what appeared to be the ATR-made plane spinning out of control as it plunged down behind a cluster of trees near houses, followed by a large plume of black smoke. .
Officials from the city of Valinhos, near Vinhedo, confirmed that there were no survivors and reported minimal damage, with only one home in the local condominium complex affected. They said no resident was injured.
"I have to be the bearer of really bad news," stated President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at an event shortly after the incident, requesting a moment of silence for the victims.
Airline Voepass said the plane, which had taken off from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, bound for Sao Paulo's main international airport, crashed in the town of Vinhedo, about 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo.
The unlisted airline mentioned that it could not provide additional details regarding the cause of the crash involving the aircraft registered as PS-VPB.
Shortly after the incident, São Paulo's state fire brigade reported that it was dispatching seven crews to the crash site.
The aircraft was identified by flight tracker FlightRadar24 as an ATR 72-500 turboprop. ATR is a joint venture between Airbus and the Italian aerospace company Leonardo.
