Rituals of Sawan: Devotees Flock to Haridwar for Sacred Dip and Rituals

On the fourth Monday of the holy month of Sawan, a large number of pilgrims gathered at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, to take a sacred dip in the Ganga. This ritual is an integral part of their spiritual journey, followed by the revered Rudrabhishek and Jalabhishek ceremonies dedicated to Lord Shiva at the Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple in Kankhal. Kankhal, known as the in-laws' place of Shiva, becomes a hub of devotional activity at this time.

Lord Shankar resides in Kankhal during this period

From the early hours of the morning, devotees formed long queues, eagerly awaiting their turn to perform the Abhishek rituals for Lord Shiva. The month of Sawan holds special significance, as it is believed that Lord Shankar resides in Kankhal during this period. Devotees arrive from all corners of the country to offer Gangajal to him. It is said that Lord Shiva remains in Kankhal for the entire month, blessing his devotees and fulfilling their desires.

Temple was established during Satyuga

Mahant Digambar Swami Vishwaeshwar Puri Maharaj, the chief priest of the Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, shares insights into the temple's profound history. According to him, the Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, located in Kankhal, was established during Satyuga, at the very inception of the universe. Lord Shiva, honoring a promise made to his in-laws, resides in this temple for a month every year, adding to its sacred importance.

Kankhal: The First Marriage Place of the Universe

Kankhal is not just a spiritual center; it holds the distinction of being the first-ever marriage site in the universe, where Lord Shiva and Sati were united at the beginning of time. This holy place is home to the universe's first self-manifested Shivalinga, which is believed to have a spiritual impact extending up to 1,000 kilometers.

The region around this Siddha Peeth is renowned as a pilgrimage city, attracting devotees who seek spiritual fulfillment. Kankhal is also recognized as the Karmasthali (place of action), Sadhana Sthal (place of spiritual practice), and the birthplace of Sati, further enhancing its significance.

Devotion at Daridra Bhanjan Temple

In addition to the activities at Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, the Siddha Peeth Daridra Bhanjan Temple in Kankhal also witnessed a steady stream of devotees from early morning. Here, a large number of Shiva devotees performed the sacred anointment and offered prayers.

According to Krishna Kumar Shastri, the priest of Daridra Bhanjan Temple, offering water to Lord Shiva for 40 consecutive days during the month of Sawan leads to the fulfillment of all wishes. This ancient temple is revered for its power to grant the desires of any devotee who anoints Lord Shiva with true devotion.

Devotees seek peace, divine blessings

The devotees, too, echo the temple's greatness and importance. Many visit regularly, especially on the fourth Monday of Sawan, which holds particular significance for performing the anointment rituals. They believe that offering water to Lord Bholenath at this temple brings peace, divine blessings, and the realization of their wishes.

In the sacred ambiance of Haridwar and Kankhal, the devotion of the pilgrims during Sawan reflects their unwavering faith in Lord Shiva and the ancient traditions that continue to thrive in these holy places.
