UP: Political slugfest begins over Lucknow incident involving misbehavior with woman in Gomti Nagar, what Yogi Adityanath said?

The police have apprehended four people on charges of misconduct towards a bike rider and a woman riding with him during heavy rain in the Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow on Wednesday.

A video capturing the incident went viral on social media. After this, questions were constantly being raised on the Uttar Pradesh government and police regarding law and order.

The opposition has questioned Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for naming only two of the arrested suspects, alleging that he is politicizing the issue.

In response to rising pressure, the Yogi Adityanath government has transferred the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and suspended the Station House Officer (SHO), outpost in-charge, along with several constables.

The government has stated that it is not showing any leniency towards the offenders.

Victims are yet to come forward

Police have arrested suspects named Pawan Yadav and Sunil Kumar based on CCTV footage, while Arbaaz and Viraj Sahu were apprehended following tips. Authorities are continuing to search for others involved in the incident. However, the two victims have yet to come forward.

On Wednesday, heavy rainfall in Lucknow led to waterlogging in several areas. A viral video shows about a dozen people enjoying the water near a bridge close to the Taj Hotel when a man and woman on a motorcycle passed by. Some youths in the vicinity splashed water on them, causing the bike to topple.

The video prompted swift police action, resulting in the identification and arrest of several people that same night.

Congress leader Aradhana Mishra Mona raised the issue in the assembly, to which the Yogi government responded by asserting that no leniency would be shown to the criminals.

In the assembly, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated, “We have established accountability for the incident in Gomti Nagar. The primary accused are Pawan Yadav and Mohammad Arbaaz. These people will not receive any special treatment; we are taking this incident seriously and have suspended the entire police post. Further action will be taken against them as well.”

Crime is crime, it should not be influenced by religion or caste: SP

The opposition Samajwadi Party has adopted a firm stance on this matter. Party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan said, “Crime should be viewed as crime, not influenced by religion or caste. The Chief Minister named two suspects but did not disclose the names of the others. The Samajwadi Party believes that if someone has committed a crime, strict action should be taken against them, regardless of their religion or caste.”

SP MP Dimple Yadav also expressed her views, stating, “The government must take action. There is video evidence, so the government can easily identify those responsible for this behavior.”

Police fail to locate the victim

The Gomti Nagar police have attempted to locate the victim but have been unsuccessful as of Thursday. Authorities indicated that the bike's number was not captured on the CCTV footage, which has complicated the search. Consequently, a case has been registered based on the complaint of a sub-inspector.

Families of the accused have asserted that their sons are being falsely implicated.

However, the police maintain that images of the arrested individuals were obtained from the CCTV, and actions are being taken accordingly.

Lucknow Police spokesperson DCP Raveena Tyagi informed the media, "We are taking action based on the CCTV evidence. More individuals are being identified, and three police teams are currently working on the case.
