Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has officially filed an appeal against her disqualification from the Paris Olympics-2024, seeking a joint award of the silver medal. The appeal was submitted to the Court of Arbitration for Sports late on Wednesday night. Initially, Vinesh had requested to compete in the final, but she has since modified her appeal to focus on the medal award.
On Wednesday morning, Vinesh's weight was recorded at 100 grams over the limit for her designated category of 50kg, leading to her disqualification from the freestyle women's wrestling event, as confirmed by the Indian Olympic Association.
In light of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, urging her to explore options to assist Vinesh and to lodge a formal protest regarding the disqualification.
This is part of the game: Vinesh
Earlier, Vinesh Phogat broke her silence after heartbreaking Paris Olympics 2024 disqualification. "It's part of the game," she told the Indian coaches who visited her after the unexpected turn of events. Women’s national coach Virender Dahiya and Manjeet Rani were among those who met with the determined wrestler.
Dahiya described the emotional impact of the news on the wrestling team, stating, "It sent a shockwave through the wrestling contingent. The girls were feeling pretty low after the news broke. We met Vinesh and tried to console her. She was brave. She told us, 'it's hard luck that we missed the medal, but it is part of the game.'"
Several officials from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) were also present during the visit to offer their support.
In additional news, Indian wrestler Antim Panghal faced a setback as she exited in the first round of the women's 53kg category, losing her opening bout by technical superiority. Her coach remarked that she struggled to find her rhythm during the match.
