What Calcutta High Court Said While Ordering CBI probe into Rape and Murder of Trainee Doctor

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, August 13, ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government's handling of the investigation.

The division bench, led by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, questioned why Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, had not yet been interrogated. The court said there appeared to be gaps in the investigation.

The bench raised concerns about how Dr. Ghosh could be appointed to another medical college shortly after resigning for moral reasons. The court stressed that he should have been one of the first persons to be questioned.

The court instructed the West Bengal government to place Dr. Ghosh on extended leave, warning that if no action was taken, the court would issue an order.

Dr. Sandeep Ghosh had resigned on Monday, August 12, stating that the trainee doctor was like a daughter to him, and as a parent, he felt compelled to step down. However, within 12 hours, the state government appointed him as the principal of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, which has incited anger among the medical community.

The Calcutta High Court is currently hearing several petitions related to the trainee doctor's case, including one from her parents, who are seeking a court-monitored investigation into their daughter's death.

The body of the trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the emergency building at RG Kar Hospital on the morning of Friday, August 9. She was on night duty, and her body showed signs of severe trauma, including bleeding from her private areas, eyes, and mouth, along with a broken neck.

A headphone was found near her body. The police arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police, on August 9. CCTV footage captured Sanjoy entering the emergency building around 4 am wearing headphones, but he was seen leaving the building around 6 am without them.
