What is status of India's projects in Bangladesh? MEA provides update

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has provided an update on the status of its development projects in Bangladesh, stating that they have been suspended due to the current situation in the country.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal commented on the matter, saying, "Our projects going on in Bangladesh have been suspended due to the current circumstances."

He further explained, "Because some people who were working there on many development projects have had to come back. These projects have also stopped due to many other reasons."

Suspension is temporary

Jaiswal emphasized that the suspension is temporary and dependent on improvements in the situation in Bangladesh. "When the situation improves, and law and order are restored, then talks will be held with the government there to see how to take it forward again. This is the situation right now," he added.

The suspension of projects comes in the wake of the anti-reservation student movement in Bangladesh, which led to significant political upheaval. The unrest escalated to a point where the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, was forced to leave the country. Following this, there were widespread reports of violence, large-scale upheaval, and attacks on minorities, which further destabilized the nation.

India is adopting a wait-and-see approach

An interim government has since been established in Bangladesh under the leadership of Nobel Prize winner Mohammad Yunus. However, India is currently adopting a wait-and-see approach, monitoring the situation closely until it stabilizes before making any decisions regarding the resumption of its development projects in the country.
