Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, will return to her country once the new caretaker government determines the date for elections, according to her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Hasina fled to India on Monday amid escalating protests that compelled her resignation. A caretaker government, headed by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was installed on Thursday with the responsibility of overseeing the upcoming elections.
In a media statement, Joy, who resides in the United States, said, "For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election."
Hasina's Awami League party is not part of the interim government, following a student-led uprising against her long-standing leadership, which resulted in nationwide violence causing around 300 fatalities and injuring thousands.
Hasina may seek asylum in Britain
Currently, Hasina is staying in a safe house in the New Delhi area. Reports from Indian media suggest that she may seek asylum in Britain, although the British Home Office has not commented on the matter.
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar indicated on Thursday that he had discussions with his British counterpart regarding the situation in Bangladesh, but did not provide further details.
Joy expressed his willingness to enter politics if necessary, stating, "I am sure the Awami League will take part in the election and we might even win."
