37 children among 46 die due to drowning while bathing during Jitiya festival in Bihar


Bihar News: 46 people have died by drowning while bathing in different districts of Bihar during Jivitputrika (Jitiya) festival. The dead include 37 children and 6 women. Also, three people are still reported missing. The state government has given this information on Thursday 26 September.


These incidents took place in 15 districts of the state during the festival on Wednesday. During the Jivitputrika festival, women observe fast for the well-being of their children. In this, the puja starts with bathing in the river-pond.


According to the information shared by the Bihar government, 37 children and 6 women have died by drowning while bathing in the rivers-ponds in different districts of the state. Most of them went to the river or pond for holy bath during the festival. Here they lost their lives in the accident.


Bihar govt announces compensation


On the instructions of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, so far, Rs 4 lakh each has been given as compensation to the families of 8 deceased for the death of 46 people in the accident during Jitiya fast. Compensation distribution will continue further. According to the information given by the Disaster Management Department of Bihar, SDRF and NDRF personnel are conducting search operations.


Highest number of deaths occurred in Aurangabad and Kaimur 


The highest number of deaths due to drowning in ponds, eight each, have occurred in Aurangabad and Kaimur districts.


In the districts of South Bihar, there is usually less water in the ponds, but according to the department, this year there is more water in the ponds due to heavy rains.


In some other districts of the state including Rohtas, Arwal, Nalanda, Siwan and Buxar, women and children have died due to drowning in water while bathing during the Jitiya festival.


The festival of Jitiya was celebrated on Tuesday and Wednesday. In this festival, women observe fast and in many states like Bihar-Jharkhand, according to different beliefs, they also go to take bath in the river or pond.
