The Congress party is grappling with internal strife following the release of its first list of candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections-2024.
Senior leader Rajesh Joon has resigned from all party positions and announced his candidacy as an Independent, expressing dissatisfaction over being denied a ticket he believed was promised to him. This discontent echoes past rebellions in the Bahadurgarh constituency, where Joon had previously contested against the party’s candidate.
Narwal is contemplating an Independent run
In addition, Congress leader Kapoor Singh Narwal is contemplating an Independent run after being overlooked for the Baroda Assembly ticket in favor of Induraj Singh Narwal. Narwal claims to have been misled by the party leadership, and a decision on his future is expected soon.
The Congress, buoyed by its success in the recent Lok Sabha elections where it won 5 out of 10 seats in Haryana, hopes to overcome these internal challenges to challenge the BJP’s longstanding dominance in the state.
Alliance with AAP stalled
However, the party’s central leadership is also dealing with dissatisfaction over its proposed alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). While an initial agreement was announced, disagreements over the allocation of seats have stalled the potential coalition.
On the BJP front, the party has encountered its own share of dissent after releasing its list of 67 candidates. Energy Minister Ranjit Chautala and MLA Lakshman Napa have left the party following denial of tickets, and former Haryana Minister Bachan Singh Arya joined them in resigning.
Arya’s departure was particularly notable given his previous tenure and his discontent over not being fielded from Safidon, where the BJP has chosen to field a Jannayak Janta Party rebel instead.
As the election date approaches, with voting scheduled for October 5 and counting on October 8, both major parties face significant internal challenges that could impact their electoral prospects.
