Haryana Elections-2024: BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has reignited the debate over the controversial agricultural laws that were repealed after widespread protests. In her recent statement, Ranaut called for the return of the three farm laws, emphasizing that farmers should demand their re-implementation to ensure the continuity of their prosperity.
Her comments, made in the context of the Haryana assembly elections-2024, have stirred the political atmosphere, drawing sharp reactions from both political parties and farmer groups. While BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia distanced the party from Ranaut’s views, clarifying that her statement was personal and not reflective of the party’s stance, it has nonetheless sparked anger among farmers, many of whom have vehemently opposed the laws in the past.
Cong Condemns Ranaut's Remarks, Stresses Farmer’s Struggles
Reacting strongly to Kangana Ranaut’s statement, Congress MP from Rohtak, Deepender Hooda, praised the efforts of farmers who fought against the agricultural laws, claiming that many sacrificed their lives to protect the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the Mandi system from what he termed a "dictatorial" BJP government.
Hooda challenged BJP leaders, stating that any attempt to reintroduce the “black laws” would be met with staunch opposition, particularly if Congress forms the next government in Haryana.
He further emphasized that Congress, if elected, would ensure that the farmers receive fair prices for their crops. Additionally, the Congress party reiterated its commitment to the welfare of farmers,
Congress national spokesperson Alok Sharma asserted, "The farmers’ movement would continue to influence elections, including the upcoming Haryana assembly elections-2024." Sharma pointed out that while MSP is a central issue, the state government could still support farmers by offering bonuses.
BJP Downplays Farmer Movement’s Influence
On the other hand, the BJP has largely downplayed the significance of the farmers' movement in the current election cycle. National Treasurer of BJP's Kisan Cell, Rampal Yadav, argued that no government had done as much for farmers as the BJP.
Yadav said, "Several schemes have been launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. They are aimed at uplifting the farming community." Yadav dismissed the idea of an ongoing farmer movement in Haryana.
Kangana’s remarks have given fresh fuel to farmer leaders & Opposition
However, Kangana Ranaut’s remarks have given fresh fuel to farmer leaders and opposition parties, who continue to voice concerns about the treatment of farmers under BJP rule. Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohad criticized Kangan for her comments, claiming that BJP's actions against farmers would hurt them in the Haryana elections.
Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, who has been protesting at the Shambhu border, demanded action against Ranaut. He questioned, "How a public figure could make such policy-related statements and claim they are personal opinions."
Farmers’ Movement’s Influence on Haryana Elections
The impact of the farmers' movement remains palpable, especially in regions where the protests were most intense. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) estimates that over 750 farmers lost their lives during the 378-day protest against the farm laws at the Delhi border, with 17 deaths from Haryana's Jind district alone. For six months, farmers have maintained a presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, keeping the movement alive.
Farmers' influence over more than 35 seats
Farmers continue to exert significant influence over more than 35 out of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana, especially in districts where Jats form the dominant community.
However, there are contrasting dynamics at play in Southern Haryana, where farmers who grow millet have benefited from rising crop prices. This has resulted in some support for the BJP in this region, despite the party's challenges in other parts of the state.
Local Leaders and Khap's Position on Farmers' Issues
Jaipal Dahiya, chief of the influential Dahiya Khap, has echoed the sentiment that the issue of farmers remains the most significant concern in the Haryana assembly elections. While the Khap traditionally avoids direct political involvement, Dahiya stated that they would stand by any decision made by the farmers. He expressed disappointment that the farmers’ demands have still not been fully met and pledged support for the movement if needed.
As the October 5 election date approaches, the Bharatiya Janata Party faces the critical task of addressing farmer concerns, particularly in regions heavily affected by the movement.
