The Aparajita Bill, which includes strict provisions aimed at addressing crimes against women in West Bengal, has become a contentious issue between Governor CV Anand Bose and the state's Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
The TMC has accused Governor CV Anand Bose of causing delays in the bill's enactment, while the Governor has criticized the bill for being rushed and containing numerous flaws.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh emphasized the importance of the bill, stating, "The Governor should immediately clear the Aparajita Bill as it is a model bill for women's safety and has provisions for strict action against those who commit crimes against women."
The urgency surrounding the bill intensified following a recent case of rape and murder involving a female doctor in West Bengal, which sparked protests among doctors both in the state and nationwide. In response to these protests, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee introduced the Aparajita Bill in the Assembly, where it was unanimously passed before being sent to the Governor.
Governor accused of employing a delaying strategy
However, Ghosh has accused the Governor of employing a "delaying strategy" in the bill's approval. Meanwhile, Governor CV Anand Bose has forwarded the Aparajita Bill to the President for consideration, as confirmed by the media cell of the Raj Bhavan.
The Raj Bhavan has also expressed dissatisfaction with the Assembly Secretariat for not providing the text and translation of the debate as required by protocol. According to a statement from the media cell, the Chief Secretary met with the Governor, and later in the day, the necessary technical report was submitted to him by the government.
