IND Vs BAN: Yash Dayal Selected for Indian Test Squad: How He Put Bitter Memories Behind To Make A Strong Comeback?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian Test cricket squad for the upcoming first Test match against Bangladesh. Among the notable selections is fast bowler Yash Dayal, who has been given an opportunity to showcase his talent at the highest level.

Dayal, a medium-fast bowler, has been selected due to his impressive performances in domestic cricket despite tough competition from established players like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh. If given a chance to play in the first Test, it will be a significant milestone in Dayal's career.

Yash Dayal's rise in Indian cricket began with his consistent performances in domestic competitions. Dayal has played 20 A-list matches in his domestic career, taking 32 wickets.

Rinku hit five consecutive sixes off Dayal's over

His name first gained significant attention during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in April 2023, in a match between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders. Dayal was tasked with bowling the final over for Gujarat Titans against a determined Rinku Singh of Kolkata Knight Riders. While it appeared that Gujarat Titans were poised for an easy win, Rinku Singh turned the game around by hitting five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal's over.

This dramatic over brought Dayal into the limelight, but not for the right reasons. On one hand, Rinku Singh was praised for his explosive batting, while on the other, Yash Dayal faced criticism and uncertainty about his future. He did not get further opportunities in subsequent matches, raising questions about his career trajectory.

Dayal's Resilience and Return to Form

Despite the setback, Yash Dayal showed resilience and focused on his domestic cricket career to make a strong comeback. He put the bitter memories of IPL behind him and delivered impressive performances in the Ranji Trophy, where he took seven wickets in four matches while representing Uttar Pradesh. Following this, he continued his form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, taking nine wickets in six matches.

Bounced back from setbacks

Dayal's consistent performances earned him a spot in the Duleep Trophy, where he represented India B. His bowling was instrumental in India's B team's 76-run victory over India A, taking four crucial wickets. These performances demonstrated his ability to bounce back from setbacks and earned him a place in the Indian Test squad.

A Memorable IPL Comeback

Yash Dayal's comeback journey reached another peak during a crucial IPL match on May 18, 2024, between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings. The match was vital as the winning team would secure a place in the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings needed 16 runs off the last six balls, and once again, Yash Dayal was entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the final over. On the crease was Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of the best finishers in the world.

Dhoni hit a towering six on the first ball, sending Chennai Super Kings fans into a frenzy. However, Yash Dayal turned the game around by dismissing Dhoni on the very next delivery. Despite the tense situation, Chennai Super Kings could not score the remaining 11 runs needed in the last four balls, and Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match, securing their place in the playoffs.

Yash Dayal's exceptional performance in this high-pressure situation earned him praise from cricket fans and critics alike. The bowler, who was previously criticized for conceding 30 runs in an over, this time prevented Chennai Super Kings from scoring even 16 runs.

Another significant chapter to his cricketing career

With his selection for the Indian Test team, Yash Dayal has added another significant chapter to his cricketing career. In addition to his domestic cricket achievements, Dayal has played 56 T20 matches, in which he has taken 53 wickets. In the Indian Premier League, he has represented two teams, Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore, in a total of 28 matches, taking 28 wickets.

Upcoming Series Against Bangladesh

The Indian cricket team is set to play the first Test match against Bangladesh on September 19, marking the beginning of a two-Test series. The second Test is scheduled to be played in Kanpur from September 27. With Yash Dayal’s inclusion in the squad, fans will be eager to see if he gets a chance to showcase his skills in the upcoming matches.
