Haryana Assembly Elections-2024: As Haryana gears up for its upcoming assembly elections, internal rifts within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have come to the surface, sparked by a new development involving senior BJP leader and former state Home Minister, Anil Vij.
In a recent statement to media, Anil Vij declared his intention to contest for the Chief Minister's position. Vij stated, "I am the most senior MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Haryana. I have contested and won elections six times. I am now contesting for the seventh time." He further emphasized his experience and popularity, hinting that it may be his time to lead the state.
Vij’s decision to stake a claim for the Chief Minister post marks a significant move, as it challenges the current party dynamics. He said that, until now, he had never made such a request to the BJP leadership. Vij said that the overwhelming demand from the people of Haryana he has asserted his seniority this time around. "I have never asked for anything from my party till date. But this time, on the request of the people of Haryana, I will stake claim for the post of Chief Minister on the basis of my seniority," said Vij.
He added that while it is ultimately up to the party’s high command to decide, he believes that, if given the opportunity, he would be capable of transforming the state. “It is the job of the high command to make me or not, but if I am made the CM, I will change the fate and picture of Haryana,” he declared confidently.
BJP high command shows signs of reluctance
Despite Vij’s bold claims, the BJP high command has shown signs of reluctance. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan publicly responded to Vij’s statement, seemingly downplaying his chances. According to Pradhan, the BJP already has a strong candidate in Haryana. "Nayab Singh Saini is a popular leader in Haryana. He is the face of the party in the state, and under his leadership, BJP will form the government in Haryana for the third time," Pradhan remarked, signaling the party’s preference for Saini over Vij.
This emerging tension between Vij’s aspirations and the central BJP leadership’s support for Nayab Singh Saini depicts the internal challenges the party may face as it heads into the Haryana elections. While Vij's experience and tenure make him a strong contender, the BJP’s high command seems to be aligning itself with Saini, possibly to present a more unified front to the electorate.
It remains to be seen how this internal competition will play out in the coming months and what impact it might have on the BJP’s performance in the elections.
