In the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, voting was held on Wednesday (August 18) for 24 assembly seats in 7 districts. The voting percentage during this period was 58.85 or nearly 59.
Chief Electoral Officer P K Pole said polling passed off peacefully. However, he said the figures are tentative and there might be a fractional increase after the final reports are received from the remote pockets and postal ballots.
The first phase of polls covered 24 seats across seven districts. Polie said there are reports of some minor incidents of scuffle or argument from a few polling stations but "no serious incident" occurred that could have forced a repoll, he said.
According to the Election Commission, Kishtwar recorded the highest voting at 77.23% and Pulwama recorded the lowest at 46.03%. Doda was second at 69.33%, and Ramban was third at 67.71%.
Iltija Mufti cast her vote from Bijbehara
PDP candidate Iltija Mufti cast her vote from Bijbehara assembly seat, she is the daughter of party chief Mehbooba Mufti. BJP candidate Shagun Parihar from Kishtwar also cast her vote.
Shagun had alleged that votes were cast without identity cards in Baghwan Mohalla of Kishtwar. After this, the atmosphere became heated, due to which voting was stopped for some time.
More than 35 thousand displaced Kashmiri Pandits living in different states of the country also cast their votes for the first phase of voting. A total of 24 special booths were made for them. There were 4 booths in Delhi, 19 in Jammu and 1 in Udhampur.
