The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of inappropriate remarks made by a judge from the Karnataka High Court. A five-judge bench, including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, is addressing the issue.
Justice Vedvyasachar Srishanand of the Karnataka High Court allegedly made objectionable comments directed at a woman lawyer during a hearing of a case. Additionally, he compared a Bengaluru area to Pakistan in a separate instance.
The Supreme Court has requested a response from the Karnataka High Court and has asked both the Attorney General and Solicitor General to assist in this matter. Further hearings are scheduled for September 25.
Two videos of the judge circulated on social media
The controversy gained traction after two videos of Justice Srishanand circulated on social media. In one clip, he refers to a Muslim-majority area of Bengaluru as 'Pakistan.' In another, he makes questionable remarks towards a woman lawyer, stating, "You know a lot about the opposition party," followed by inappropriate comments.
