Sumit Antil, who won the gold medal in the Tokyo Paralympics, has also won gold in the Paris Paralympics-2024.
On Monday, Sumit Antil retained his hold on the gold medal by throwing the javelin 70.59 meters in the Javelin Throw F 64 category.
The 26-year-old from Sonipat, Haryana, surpassed his previous Paralympic record of 68.55m, set in Tokyo when he won gold three years ago. His world record remains an impressive 73.29m. Antil follows in the footsteps of shooter Avani Lekhara, becoming the second Indian to defend a Paralympics title.
Sumit is also a two-time world champion and also holds a world record. Sumit first set a world record at the 2023 World Championships, where he won the gold medal with a throw of 70.83 meters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated him on the victory.
The Prime Minister has written in his X post, "Extraordinary performance by Sumit! Congratulations to him for winning the gold in the men's javelin F64 event! He has shown extraordinary consistency and excellence. Best wishes for the future.''
Suhas Yathiraj won the silver medal
On Monday itself, Indian badminton player Suhas Yathiraj won the silver medal in the men's singles SL4 category. He lost to French shuttler Lucas Mazur in the final.
With this, Suhas has also become the first Indian badminton player to win medals in both Tokyo and Paris Paralympics.
India has bagged 14 medals
India has currently got a total of 14 medals with 3 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze in the Paralympic Games. India is at the 14th position in the medal table.
