Para badminton player Nitesh Kumar has secured the gold medal in the men's singles SL3 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Kumar achieved this victory by overcoming Britain’s Daniel Bethell in a thrilling final on Monday.
Ranked as the world number one in the men’s singles SL3 category, Kumar was born on December 30, 1994, in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana. He pursued electrical engineering at IIT Mandi and initially played football, but a car accident in Visakhapatnam in 2009 resulted in permanent leg disability.
Undeterred by his injury, Kumar transitioned to badminton, discovering a passion for the sport during his time at IIT-Mandi. He honed his skills on the court, often challenging able-bodied. He played for Haryana in the Para National Games held in Faridabad in 2016. He won the bronze medal.
The following year, he earned a silver medal in men’s singles and a bronze in doubles at the Bengaluru championships.
In 2020, Kumar achieved a significant milestone by defeating Tokyo Paralympic medalists Pramod and Manoj to win the gold medal at the National Championship, solidifying his status as one of India’s top para-badminton players.
