Trinamool Congress MP in Rajya Sabha Jawahar Sircar has written a letter to W Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and offered his resignation.
Following this announcement, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached out to Jawahar Sircar, and the two leaders engaged in a lengthy conversation, during which the Chief Minister listened to his perspective.
Sources indicate that Jawahar Sircar informed the Chief Minister, "I have decided to resign; it is not possible for me to backtrack on this." Despite the phone call, Jawahar Sircar reportedly remains resolute in his decision. He said he believes that the Chief Minister should take action regarding the Kolkata case and initiate discussions with the doctors.
Earlier, Sircar posted on the social media platform X, "I am resigning as an MP because the West Bengal government mishandled the public movement after the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case."
Along with this, Jawahar Sircar has also decided to quit politics.
He said, "I am with the people in their struggle for justice. My commitment to values will always be there."
Jawahar Sircar made several allegations against Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal government and the TMC in the letter offering his resignation.
In relation to the RG Kar rape-murder case, Jawahar Sircar stated, "The public's current anger stems from the corruption and favoritism exhibited by certain individuals. I have not witnessed such a level of distrust towards the government in recent years."
"In the case of RG Kar Hospital incident, I was expecting for the last one month that you (Mamata Banerjee) would directly intervene in this matter as per your old style, but this did not happen and now whatever steps the government is taking are too late and are not enough either."
Sircar said that he believed that prompt and stringent action against those responsible would have mitigated the unrest.
He further said, "I know that political parties are looking for their opportunity in this movement. But, the crowd of youth and common people who have come out on the streets do not want any politics, they want justice and punishment for the culprits. We have to understand that this movement is for the victim and against the state government and the party."
A personal decision: Kunal Ghosh
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh has reacted after Jawahar Sircar's resignation. He has described Jawahar Sarkar's resignation as a personal decision.
Kunal Ghosh said, "He is a very respected and one of the best bureaucrats of the country and Bengal. This is his personal decision. I cannot comment on it. He has full right to take any decision about himself."
On the other hand, regarding the allegations against Mamata Banerjee, he said, "We can only say that we also agree with a large part of what Jawahar Sarkar has written in the letter, the concerns and questions."
"We are also with the sentiment of the civic society. But the stand taken by Jawahar Sircar is his decision. And our stand is that we will take positive administrative steps by staying within the party under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee."
In response to this, BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala called for Mamata Banerjee's resignation. He stated, "If anyone should resign, it should be Mamata Banerjee. If she resigns based on the letter written by Jawahar Sircar, it would clarify two or three points that we have been consistently raising."
