Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal surprised both his opponents and political analysts by unexpectedly announcing his resignation on Sunday. Few anticipated that Kejriwal would make such a significant move immediately after his release from jail. This has sparked widespread speculation regarding the motivations behind his decision.
Following the announcement of Kejriwal's resignation, political analysts have been keen to understand the factors that led to this decision. Since his arrest, opposition parties, particularly the BJP, have been vocally calling for his resignation. However, during his time in jail, Kejriwal did not express any intention to resign. So, what prompted him to make this announcement upon his release? There are three key reasons that may explain why Kejriwal chose to resign.
Primary reason is upcoming Haryana Elections
The primary reason is the upcoming Haryana Assembly Elections 2024. Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal received bail from the Supreme Court. Subsequently, during a speech to party workers on Sunday, he announced his decision to resign from the Chief Minister position.
This announcement has sparked discussions in political circles, suggesting that Kejriwal's move is strategically aimed at the Haryana elections. Analysts believe that this decision could generate sympathy for the Aam Aadmi Party, potentially enhancing its presence in the state, and he might even emerge as a key player in the political landscape.
Delhi elections could be the second reason
Delhi Assembly elections could be the second reason for resigning. Elections are scheduled to take place in Delhi in February of next year. In light of this, Kejriwal has announced his resignation and called for early elections. He also mentioned that he is prepared to undergo an "Agnipariksha" (test by fire), stating that he will return to the Chief Minister position only after receiving a certificate of honesty from the public. This move is seen as a strategy to emotionally connect with the electorate, potentially framing the BJP as the antagonist, which could work to his advantage in the upcoming elections.
SC's bail conditions
Experts suggest that Kejriwal's decision is influenced by several conditions imposed on him by the Supreme Court order, which has increased the pressure on him to step down. Legal analysts argue that the bail conditions do not allow Arvind Kejriwal to fully exercise his responsibilities as Chief Minister. Specifically, despite being released, he is prohibited from accessing the Secretariat or the Chief Minister's Office and can only sign documents that require approval from the Lieutenant Governor. In contrast, another Chief Minister would have the authority to make all necessary decisions without such restrictions.
