Maldives-India relations: Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has expressed a desire to enhance relations with India, stating that previous misunderstandings between the two nations have been resolved. Since President Mohmed Muizzu took office, there have been indications of increased tension in India-Maldives relations, particularly concerning the issue of the withdrawal of Indian troops.
Since Muizzu assumed office, there has been a noticeable imbalance in the relationship between India and the Maldives. However, in light of the ongoing economic crisis, Muizzu is now making efforts to mend ties with India. Experts suggest that this visit could be significant for both nations and is anticipated to foster improved relations.
Muizzu has demanded withdrawal of Indian troops
President Muizzu had demanded the withdrawal of Indian troops after taking power in November 2023. He had said that if India does not withdraw its troops, it would be an insult to the democratic freedom of Maldives. Muizzu characterized the presence of the Indian Army as inconsistent with the Constitution of the Maldives and referred to it as a threat to the nation's future. This statement contributed to heightened tensions between the two countries.
Muizzu may visit India soon
Maldives President Muizzu will soon visit India officially. His spokesperson gave this information on September 10. However, the date of this visit has not been decided yet. Earlier, Muizzu attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9. Muizzu's upcoming visit is being viewed as a positive step towards enhancing relations between the two countries.
India offers assistance to Maldives
India has offered immediate financial assistance of $400 million to Maldives under its Currency Swap Program. According to Indian officials, Maldives can take advantage of this assistance immediately. This program provides help to regional countries to deal with the economic crisis and it can get relief in the current economic problems of Maldives.
Muizzu's growing closeness with China
After becoming President, Muizzu has strengthened his relations with China. Recently a new agreement has been signed between Maldives and China, under which China will give more loans to Maldives. However, the amount of this loan has not been disclosed yet. Muizzu has made many changes in Maldives' policies by giving priority to China, which has soured the traditional relations with India.
