The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its list of candidates for the upcoming by-elections on 25 seats across 8 states on Saturday evening. The list includes 24 assembly seats and the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala.
Navya Haridas has been nominated by the BJP to contest the Wayanad seat, where she will face off against Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of the Congress. This will mark Priyanka Gandhi’s first foray into a Lok Sabha election, with her filing her nomination on October 23.
Her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who previously held the Wayanad seat, will be present alongside her during the nomination process. Priyanka is also expected to hold a roadshow after filing her nomination.
By-Elections Across 14 States
The by-elections will be held for 48 assembly and 2 Lok Sabha seats across 14 states. Voting is scheduled for November 13 on 47 assembly seats across 13 states, as well as for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. This phase of voting will be followed by elections on November 20 for the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra and the Kedarnath assembly seat in Uttarakhand. The Election Commission has confirmed that the results for all these seats will be declared on November 23.
The Election Commission announced the dates for these by-elections on October 15, covering assembly and Lok Sabha seats in 14 states. Voting will take place in two phases.
November 13: Elections will be held for 47 assembly seats across 13 states, along with the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala.
November 20: Elections will be held for the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra and the Kedarnath assembly seat in Uttarakhand.
The results of all these elections, both assembly and Lok Sabha, will be declared together on November 23.
Priyanka's First Lok Sabha Bid
Priyanka Gandhi's decision to contest from Wayanad has added a significant dimension to the by-elections. In the 2024 general elections, Rahul Gandhi won from both Wayanad in Kerala and the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh. As per tradition, he chose to retain the family’s long-held seat of Rae Bareli, vacating Wayanad, which set the stage for Priyanka to step in as the Congress candidate.
Cong unable to meet people's expectations: Navya
Navya Haridas, speaking to the media following her nomination, underscored the pressing needs of the Wayanad constituency.
“The people of Wayanad are in need of significant development. Unfortunately, the Congress party has not been able to meet their expectations. Going forward, the residents of Wayanad deserve a more effective representative in Parliament, one who can truly address their concerns,” Haridas stated.
She further stressed the necessity of having a leader who places the priorities of the local community at the forefront of their agenda.
