Custodial Deaths Spark Controversy in Uttar Pradesh: Opposition Challenges CM Yogi Adityanath’s Administration

The recent custodial death at Chinhat Police Station in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has once again stirred up political tension across the state. Opposition parties are taking aim at the government, questioning both the state's policing methods and the governance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding the frequency of such incidents under his administration.

Custodial Deaths: A Recurring Issue in UP

This latest incident is not an isolated case in Uttar Pradesh; custodial deaths have been a recurring concern. In past years, several individuals have died under similar circumstances, including Devnarayan in Gonda and Rajkumar Chauhan in Hathras. To assess the gravity of the situation, a review of custodial death data over the last six years sheds light on the scale of the issue since Yogi Adityanath took office.

The Context of the Chinhat Case

The incident in Chinhat revolves around Mohit Pandey, who was detained by police over a minor dispute in Lucknow. Reports indicate that police took Pandey into custody around 11 p.m., and by 1:30 a.m., his health reportedly worsened. He later died during treatment at the hospital. This sudden turn of events has raised allegations of police brutality, with claims that Pandey’s death was due to physical abuse while in custody. The uproar over his death has not only put Chinhat Police Station under scrutiny but has also brought the spotlight back onto the broader issue of custodial deaths in the state.

Data from the past six years highlights a troubling pattern of custodial deaths in Uttar Pradesh. Since 2018, a significant number of people have reportedly died while in police custody.

Opposition Targets Govt

The recent death at Chinhat Police Station has fueled a heated response from political leaders. Samajwadi Party leader and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, alongside Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav, has sharply criticized the Yogi administration, raising alarms over police brutality and custodial misconduct. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has also joined in, expressing her concerns and holding the state government accountable for failing to curb such incidents.

This wave of criticism has intensified the pressure on CM Yogi Adityanath’s administration to address both the alleged police abuses and the larger systemic issues contributing to custodial deaths across the state.
