Madhya Pradesh: Revival of Traditional Pottery; Local Earthen Lamps Gain Popularity for Diwali Celebrations

The potter’s wheel is in full swing this Diwali season in Madhya Pradesh as artisans craft earthen lamps to honor Goddess Lakshmi. Following the "Vocal for Local" initiative by PM Modi and MP Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, potters are hopeful for strong sales this year, with heightened demand for locally made products.

In areas like Bilhari, Umariapan, and Kanti in the Katni district, entire families are involved in the meticulous work of pottery-making. From kneading clay to shaping the lamps on the wheel, each family member has a designated role. Women play a significant part, tending to the bonfire (Awa), neatly arranging the finished lamps, and adorning them with colorful designs to make them more attractive.

Shivkumar Kumhar, a potter from Pahadi Niwar village, shares that the "Local for Vocal" movement championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Mohan has spurred greater interest in traditional clay lamps this year compared to last.

Fellow potter Balu Kumhar explains that the labor-intensive process of crafting these lamps and idols begins about two months before the festival. He highlights the environmental benefits of earthen diyas, which help reduce air pollution, promote indigenous products, and provide employment for every family member involved.

For the potter community, the rise in demand not only ensures a steady livelihood but also preserves their cultural heritage, allowing traditional crafts to thrive in the modern age.
