Now this allowance has been increased from 502% to 53% and the employees will get the benefit of this increase from July 1, 2024.
The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday gave the green signal to this decision, this decision of the government will benefit 1.15 crore employees and pensioners across the country.
With this increase, an entry-level employee, whose monthly income is Rs 18 thousand, will get an increase of Rs 540 in his salary. This increase in dearness allowance is based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI), which aims to provide relief to employees and pensioners from rising inflation.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "Union Cabinet has approved a 3% hike in DA for central government employees and Dearness Relief for pensioners. A total of Rs 9448 crores annually will be added to the paycheck of central government employees..."
Pensioners get benefit of Dearness Relief
Also, pensioners will also get a 3% increase in Dearness Relief (DR). Earlier, Dearness Relief was increased by 4% in March 2024, which became effective in February, making both DA and DR 50% for pensioners.
Increase as per the instructions of 7th Pay Commission
This decision has been taken especially before the festive season, which will help government employees and pensioners to get financial strength as well as deal with inflation to some extent. Dearness allowance is calculated as per the guidelines of the 7th Pay Commission and it is done twice a year (applicable from 1 January and 1 July). But this time due to some delay, the July hike has been implemented before the festive season.
