Female wrestler and Olympian Vinesh Phogat has won the Julana seat in the Haryana Assembly elections-2024.
Phogat, who initially took the lead when the counting began, was trailing at one point as the process continued. However, she regained her lead and maintained it, resulting in a comfortable victory.
Vinesh Phogat, who is contesting on a Congress ticket, won by 6,015 votes and got a total of 65,080 votes.
BJP's Yogesh Kumar came second with 59,065 votes. Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate Surender Lather came third in the high-profile constituency in Jind district.
Vinesh Phogat had joined the Congress shortly before the Haryana Assembly elections. Bajrang Punia also joined the Congress along with her.
In the 2019 election, the seat was won by Amarjeet Dhanda of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), which was part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). In 2014 and 2009, the seat was won by Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate Parminder Singh Dhull.
Vinesh Phogat has given her first reaction after registering her win from Julana seat of Haryana. There is a festive atmosphere in Julana after Vinesh Phogat's victory.
Vinesh Phogat was in Jind today. She was asked whether she would choose sports or politics now.
In response to this, she said, "If I have come into politics, then I will keep this in mind. People have given me love and affection. In such a situation, I will work for the people."
She said, "It is not that we can do both politics and wrestling."
Vinesh Phogat has won from Julana by more than 6 thousand votes. BJP's Yogesh Kumar, who came second, has got more than 59 thousand votes.
