Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mehraj Malik has won from Doda assembly seat of Jammu and Kashmir by more than four thousand votes.
His nearest rival BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana is in second place with more than 18 thousand votes. Congress candidate Khalid Najib Suharwardy is in third place with more than 13 thousand votes.
In 2014, BJP's Shakti Raj Parihar won here. He got more than 24 thousand votes here.
Aam Aadmi Party is contesting elections in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time. Voting was held in three phases for 90 assembly seats of Jammu and Kashmir.
On Mehraj Malik's victory, senior party leader Sanjay Singh said, "It is a great news for the Aam Aadmi Party that Mehraj Malik has won in such a remote area, in Doda. He is a very aggressive leader. He has worked on the ground. The caravan of Aam Aadmi Party, the politics of Arvind Kejriwal is reaching different parts of the country."
AAP registers presence in 5th state
The victory of Malik in J&K marks the presence of the newest national party in the fifth state now. Apart from governments in Delhi and Punjab, AAP appointed two MLAs in Goa and five in Gujarat when the states went for polls in 2022.
AAP’s strong showing in J&K has surprised many, especially considering its poor performance in Haryana, the home state of party leader Arvind Kejriwal. If the Haryana results continue in this trend, it could spell a significant setback for Kejriwal ahead of the Delhi elections, which are just four months away.
The Haryana outcome also holds importance due to AAP’s inability to finalise a seat-sharing deal with the Congress, its national ally under the INDIA bloc. Despite nearing an agreement, state-level leaders on both sides rejected a deal suggested by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has consistently advocated for opposition unity.
