Haryana Election Results 2024: The assembly election results for Haryana have begun rolling in, and the spotlight is on the fiercely contested Tosham seat. As of the latest count, BJP's Shruti Chaudhary has taken a substantial lead of 2,951 votes over Congress candidate Anirudh Chaudhary. Shruti has secured 23,905 votes so far, positioning herself ahead in this high-stakes race, where Indian cricket icon Virender Sehwag had actively campaigned for Congress' Anirudh.
Historical significance
Tosham holds historical significance as one of Haryana’s prominent constituencies. This year, the contest is particularly intriguing as cousins Shruti and Anirudh, both from the same political dynasty, are pitted against each other.
Shruti Chaudhary, granddaughter of former Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal and daughter of Kiran Chaudhary, is representing the BJP. On the other side, Anirudh Chaudhary, also a grandson of Bansi Lal, is the Congress candidate. Both candidates are the third generation of their political family, which has dominated the Tosham seat for five consecutive terms. However, with Anirudh entering the fray, the 2024 contest has been tighter than ever.
Sehwag's Campaign in Tosham
Adding to the buzz, former cricketer Virender Sehwag campaigned for Anirudh Chaudhary, rallying support for the Congress candidate. Sehwag expressed confidence in Anirudh’s chances, stating that the people of Tosham would vote in large numbers for him. Sehwag shared that his presence was a way of fulfilling his personal duty, saying, "When the elder brother does something, everyone comes together to help."
Anirudh Chaudhary expressed his gratitude towards Sehwag, remarking that cricketers generally don’t participate in political campaigns but that Sehwag, or "Veeru" as he is fondly called, always steps up. He shared that their conversations rarely focus on cricket, revolving more around personal matters.
Sehwag vouched for Anirudh's administrative experience, assuring the voters that Anirudh would live up to his promises if elected. Despite this high-profile backing, Anirudh has found himself trailing in the vote count behind Shruti Chaudhary.
In a significant development in Jind district, Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat, a prominent wrestler, clinched a decisive victory by 6,015 votes.
While Vinesh Phogat's win brings a ray of hope to the Congress in Jind, the situation remains challenging in Tosham, where Shruti Chaudhary is on track to secure a win for the BJP. Despite Virender Sehwag’s efforts to energize the Congress base in Tosham, it appears that Shruti’s political legacy and voter support have given her an edge in this electoral battle.
