MP: Centre recommendeds inclusion of Orchha in UNESCO World Heritage List, Discover Cultural and Historical Attractions of Orchha



Bhopal: The Central Government has handed over the dossier (compiled documents) prepared by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board to the UNESCOWorld Heritage Committee for nominating the historic group of Orchha in the UNESCO World Heritage List. 


The Centre has recommended declaring the historic group of Orchha as a World Heritage Site for the year 2027-28. The Indian Ambassador to the UNESCO office in Paris, Mr. Vishal V. Sharma has handed over the dossier of Orchha to Mr. Lazare Eloundou Asomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. After the official declaration of UNESCO, Orchha will be the only World Heritage Site in the country which is state protected.


Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary Tourism and Culture and Managing Director Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board said that this is a proud achievement for the state's cultural and historical heritage. Orchha is renowned for its unique architectural style and rich historical significance. The historical city is set to gain global recognition with its inclusion in the World Heritage List. Orchha will undoubtedly become a major attraction for international tourists.


Orchha's Unique Heritage


Orchha is renowned for its Bundela architecture exemplified by majestic palaces, temples, and forts. The Jahangir Mahal, Raja Ram Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, and the Orchha Fort complex are some of the prominent landmarks. The town's location on the banks of the Betwa River adds to its natural beauty and spiritual significance.



Cultural and historical attractions of Orchha


Bundela architectural style: The architecture of Orchha was developed by the Bundela rulers, which symbolizes a unique architectural style, which includes palaces, temples, and forts.


Jahangir Mahal: The famous Jahangir Mahal of Orchha is a unique amalgamation of Mughal and Rajput architecture. It was built to welcome the Mughal emperor Jahangir.


Raja Ram Temple: The only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king. It reflects the religious and cultural importance of Orchha.


Chaturbhuj Temple: This huge and grand temple is an excellent example of unique architecture.


Orchha Fort Complex: The fort complex of Orchha symbolizes the power and prestige of the Bundelkhand region, which includes palaces, darbar halls and other historical structures.

Royal Chhatris: The royal chhatris of Orchha, located on the banks of the Betwa River, were built in memory of the Bundela kings and are a great example of royal architecture.


Amar Mahal and Lakshmi Narayan Temple: The wall paintings and architecture done in these temples reflect the religious faith and cultural contribution of the Bundela rulers.


Major benefits of Orchha being nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site


Getting the World Heritage status by UNESCO will give Orchha international recognition as a major cultural and historical site.
