Champions Trophy 2025: Indian media outlets have reported that the upcoming Champions Trophy may follow a hybrid model due to safety concerns raised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Allegedly, the BCCI has requested that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) arrange for India's matches to be held in Dubai, rather than Pakistan, to ensure player safety. These reports have sparked frustration from the PCB, with officials rejecting claims of any formal agreement on this approach.
No official discussion between PCB and BCCI: Naqvi
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi refuted the media reports, labeling them as false. Naqvi clarified that there has been no official discussion between the PCB and BCCI about a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. He emphasized that if India genuinely objects to playing in Pakistan, the BCCI should communicate this in writing rather than relying on media speculation. Naqvi insisted that no official dialogue or formal proposal regarding a hybrid format has been presented to the PCB.
Keep sports separate from politics: Naqvi
Naqvi highlighted the importance of keeping sports separate from politics. He remarked that Pakistan has previously shown goodwill toward India in sports but will not tolerate the politicization of cricket. He reiterated that the PCB expects the Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan as scheduled, without any alterations to the tournament's format.
Other cricket boards have not raised concerns: Naqvi
Expressing confidence in Pakistan's hosting plans, Naqvi said that other cricket boards have not raised concerns about holding the event in Pakistan. He stated that the PCB is prepared to host the tournament in December 2024 and anticipates that the International Cricket Council (ICC) will soon confirm the schedule. Naqvi expressed optimism that cricket fans from around the world will attend the tournament in Pakistan, contributing to the promotion of the sport in the region.
