Following the Maharashtra assembly election results, it is now clear that the Mahayuti alliance is set to form the state government. However, the coalition, composed of BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), has yet to finalize its candidate for the Chief Minister (CM) position.
Urgency of Government Formation
The current assembly term concludes on November 26, making it imperative for the new government to be formed before this deadline. To finalize the leadership choice, Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar are scheduled to travel to Delhi on Sunday evening. Their agenda includes discussions with the BJP high command, and the name of the new CM is expected to be announced after this meeting.
Expected Power-Sharing Formula
According to sources, a power-sharing structure has already been agreed upon. The arrangement includes appointing one Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers. Additionally, the Mahayuti alliance has decided on a formula for ministerial posts, with one ministerial position for every 6-7 MLAs. Based on this formula, the BJP is expected to secure 22-24 ministerial positions, the Shinde faction 10-12, and the Ajit Pawar faction 8-10.
Once the CM candidate is announced, the swearing-in ceremony is anticipated to take place at Mumbai’s Raj Bhavan as early as Monday. Reflecting on the alliance’s dynamics, CM Eknath Shinde remarked after the electoral victory that the pre-election agreement did not mandate that the party winning the most seats would automatically secure the CM position.
