At number two is captain and batsman Shreyas Iyer, who made Kolkata the champion last season. Shreyas was bought by Punjab Kings by bidding 26.75 crores.
The surprising deal was that of Venkatesh Iyer, for whom the bidding went up to 23.50 crores between Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangalore Royal Challengers. Kolkata bought Venkatesh for 23.75 crores. Venkatesan had scored a fifty against Hyderabad in the last IPL final.
Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer was purchased by Punjab Kings for an unprecedented Rs 26.75 crore. This acquisition has dethroned Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who previously held the record after being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore.
Intense Bidding War for Shreyas Iyer
Iyer's sale generated intense competition between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, with both franchises eager to secure the talented middle-order batsman. Ultimately, Punjab Kings emerged victorious in the bidding war, successfully acquiring Iyer and establishing him as a high-profile addition to their roster.
Iyer’s Journey Through the IPL
Shreyas Iyer has had a dynamic IPL career, having previously captained the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the last IPL season. Under his leadership, Kolkata Knight Riders clinched the championship title in the 17th season of the league, reinforcing Iyer's strategic skills and batting prowess. In 2022, Kolkata had signed him for Rs 12.25 crore, and his performance in that season made him a valuable asset for any team.
Before joining KKR, Iyer was associated with the Delhi Capitals, where he also served as captain. His leadership qualities and ability to anchor the innings have been evident throughout his IPL journey, making him a highly sought-after player.
Punjab Kings Strengthen Their Squad
In addition to signing Iyer, Punjab Kings further bolstered their team by retaining key bowler Arshdeep Singh for Rs 18 crore through the Right to Match (RTM) rule. Arshdeep, a promising fast bowler, has been instrumental in Punjab's bowling lineup, and his retention is expected to enhance the team’s overall balance and depth.
With the acquisition of Shreyas Iyer and the retention of Arshdeep Singh, Punjab Kings have shown a clear intent to build a formidable team for the upcoming season. Iyer’s record-breaking sale not only highlights his value as a player but also marks a new milestone in the evolving dynamics of IPL auctions.
