Frustrated by High Food and Beverage Prices at Indian Airports? Check This AAI’s Plan

The high prices of food and beverages at Indian airports have long been a source of frustration for passengers. However, an upcoming initiative by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) aims to address this issue by introducing "economical zones" at all major airports, where travelers can access affordable food options.

These budget-friendly zones are expected to bring significant relief by providing items at substantially lower prices compared to typical airport outlets.

Lower Prices on Popular Items

According to the AAI’s plan, food and beverage items in these economical zones will be 60-70% cheaper than at regular airport outlets. To illustrate, while a cup of tea currently costs between Rs 125 to Rs 200 at airports, it will be available for Rs 50-60 in these zones. This move aims to make essential food items more accessible to passengers without compromising their budgets.

Streamlined Service and Compact Meals

Although the food in these zones will be more affordable, there will be some compromises in service and presentation. Instead of seating arrangements, passengers will find standing tables, promoting quick and convenient consumption.

Additionally, the portions and packaging will be simplified, with tea served in smaller cups or glasses and meals offered as compact, portioned options rather than full-course offerings. These adjustments help maintain low prices while still catering to the needs of travelers seeking a quick bite.

Focus on Food and Beverage Offerings Only

Initially, the economical zones will focus solely on food and beverage outlets, excluding other retail options such as clothing, toys, or mobile accessories. The AAI's goal is to create an area dedicated to providing affordable, essential refreshments for passengers, ensuring they have access to budget-friendly options without extensive retail distractions.

Locations identified

AAI sources indicate that locations have already been identified within the departure areas of major airports, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kochi. Each zone will feature 6-8 food and beverage outlets, designed to accommodate approximately 160-200 passengers per hour. By situating these zones in high-traffic areas, the AAI aims to provide accessible and cost-effective dining options to a large number of travelers.

Responding to Long-Standing Complaints

This initiative addresses ongoing complaints from passengers and public representatives regarding the exorbitant costs of airport food and beverages. For many travelers, a typical journey can involve up to 6-7 hours of transit time, from leaving home to reaching their final destination.

During this time, refreshments such as tea or light snacks are often necessary, yet the high prices at airport outlets frequently discourage passengers from making purchases. By introducing these economical zones, AAI aims to provide relief to passengers, helping them to stay refreshed without feeling the pinch.

The economical zones are a promising step toward making travel more affordable and comfortable for all, allowing passengers to enjoy essential refreshments at a reasonable cost while navigating India's busy airports.
