Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Guyana on his visit. PM Modi has posted on social media and thanked Guyana's President Dr. Irfan Ali and Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips for welcoming him to Guyana.
Earlier, PM Modi was in Brazil for the G-20 conference.
PM Modi is the first Prime Minister of India to visit Guyana in the last five decades.
Guyana has a large population of people of Indian origin.
Guyana has announced to give the country's highest honor, The Order of Excellence, to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Apart from this, Barbados has also announced to give PM Modi its prestigious honor 'Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados'.
Guyana, the only English speaking country in South America, was settled as a colony by Britain.
After the abolition of slavery, Guyana was the largest immigrant destination for Indians from any of Britain's colonial countries.
This is why four out of every ten citizens of Guyana, a country bordering Brazil and having a border dispute with Venezuela for centuries, are originally from the Indian subcontinent.
Apart from India, these include citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh as well.
