MP: Elephants trample three people in Bandhavgarh, 2 die


On one hand, where 10 elephants have died under suspicious circumstances in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve located in Umaria district, on the other hand a herd of elephants has trampled 3 villagers in Chandia forest area of the Reserve. Till now 2 of them have been declared dead. One youth is injured. 


The incident took place in Devra village on NH-43 on Saturday morning. This village is just 4 km away from Salkhaniya village, where 10 elephants have died in the last 3 days.


According to the information, 3 elephants entered the village at around 8 am. There was a commotion as soon as the elephants were seen. Ratan Yadav (62) who had gone to the river bank got caught under the elephant's feet. Due to this, he died on the spot. At the same time, Bhairav Kol (35) was also trampled by an elephant near Bagdari Talaiya, he also died on the spot. The forest staff is appealing to people not to go into the forest.


Vehicles and scaffolding also damaged


The elephants damaged 2 vehicles near Chandia College and a scaffolding built in the village field. Villager Malu Sahu got injured while harvesting paddy in the field. He has been admitted to the hospital. Forest department and police officials reached the spot on information. Villagers are in panic after the movement of elephants in the village. The forest department team is trying to rescue the elephants.


Search begins for elephants


SDO of Forest Division Kuldeep Tripathi said that after receiving the information, the team of Chandia, Naurozabad and Umaria Forest Range has reached the spot. More than 50 officers and employees have been deployed. Tracking of elephants is being done. Three elephants are being reported, whose search is going on. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has also been informed. At present it is not clear whether these elephants are from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve or have come from somewhere else.


Instructions to give compensation to the family of the deceased


As soon as the information about this incident in Chandia forest area was received, ACS of Forest Department Ashok Barnwal, PCCF Aseem Srivastava also reached the spot. They discussed with the staff and inspected the spot. Also, ACS Barnwal instructed Umaria DFO to give compensation within 24 hours.
