Mumbai residents may soon experience significant relief from the city's notorious traffic jams, thanks to an innovative solution the government is preparing to introduce. A new water taxi service is set to launch, which will connect Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. This much-anticipated service aims to drastically reduce travel times between key areas, making commuting more convenient and efficient.
Cutting Travel Time Drastically
Currently, traveling from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, or even from Mumbai to the airport, can take up to one and a half to two hours by road, especially during peak hours. The water taxi, however, will transform this commute, reducing the journey to a remarkable 17 minutes. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared these updates, highlighting the significant impact the new service will have on daily commuters.
An Alternative Route to Tackle Congestion
Gadkari outlined the government’s strategy to improve connectivity in the region. He emphasized the benefits of a sea-based transit solution, which leverages the coastal geography of Mumbai. By shifting some commuter traffic from roads to waterways, the government aims to ease congestion on major routes, particularly those leading to Navi Mumbai airport.
Gadkari mentioned that this service is part of a broader effort to improve transport between Thane and Mumbai and to alleviate the city’s traffic challenges.
Expected Timeline for the Water Taxi Service
The water taxi route between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai’s international airport is scheduled to start operations by March 2025. To facilitate this service, a dedicated jetty has already been constructed near the Navi Mumbai airport, allowing easy access to the water taxis for travelers. The minister noted that the new route would not only reduce traffic on the main roads but also contribute to lowering air pollution in the region.
