Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Special children of Chingari Trust pay tribute to gas victims

On the eve of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy anniversary, the special children of Chingari Rehabilitation Centre paid heartfelt tributes to the victims through a solemn candlelight vigil. Children with various congenital disabilities gathered to honor those who lost their lives in one of the world's worst industrial disasters, marking the occasion with grace and dignity.

A Tribute to Pain and Perseverance

The primary aim of the peaceful vigil was to commemorate the suffering endured by the victims and their families. Through this tribute, the children conveyed a powerful message to the world: tragedies like Bhopal must serve as a lesson to prevent similar disasters in the future. Their quiet determination reflected the hope that no other community should suffer the same fate.

Born from Tragedy: The Impact of Industrial Poison

These children are not disabled by natural causes but are victims of the toxic legacy left by Union Carbide (now Dow Chemicals). Chingari Trust’s founders, Champa Devi Shukla and Rasheeda Bee, emphasized the need to hold corporations accountable. “We must learn from this tragedy and ensure that no company is ever allowed to poison communities again,” they said, urging global vigilance and corporate responsibility.

Chingari Trust’s Mission: 18 Years of Rehabilitation

For 18 years, Chingari Trust has tirelessly worked to rehabilitate children born with disabilities due to the toxic aftermath of the Bhopal disaster and the subsequent water contamination. Currently, the trust supports 1,333 children registered under its care, providing essential services to help them lead more fulfilling lives.

Comprehensive Care for Special Children

Approximately 180 children visit Chingari Trust regularly, receiving a range of vital services free of charge. These include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, special education, and recreational activities such as sports and music. The Trust also offers mid-day meals, medications, and a pick-and-drop van service, ensuring that the children’s needs are met holistically.

A Call for Global Responsibility

The Chingari Trust’s annual vigil is more than a tribute—it is a call to action. It reminds the world that corporate negligence can have catastrophic, multigenerational effects. Through their resilience, these children inspire others to demand safer industrial practices and justice for affected communities.

The legacy of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy lives on, not only in memory but in the ongoing fight for corporate accountability and human dignity.
