Chhattisgarh: Bastar's Evolution into a Global Tourist Destination: Discover The Unique Charm of Dhudmaras Village

For years, the name Bastar in Chhattisgarh conjured images of Naxalism. However, this region is now making headlines for a very different reason—tourism. In a remarkable shift, the United Nations (UN) has recognized Dhudmaras, a village in Bastar, as one of the top 60 tourist destinations in the world. This recognition has placed Bastar firmly on the global tourism map. Let’s explore what makes Dhudmaras so special.

Bastar: A Haven of Natural Beauty

Often referred to as the "island of Sal forests," Bastar is renowned for its lush greenery and natural beauty. It draws visitors from across India and the world who are eager to experience its serene environment and unique culture. Once known mainly for its conflict-ridden history, Bastar has now become synonymous with natural wonder and adventure. The selection of Dhudmaras by the UN highlights Bastar’s transformation into a tourist hotspot, elevating its status on the world stage.

Adventure Tourism: Bamboo Rafting and Kayaking

Dhudmaras is located within the stunning Kanger Valley National Park, and it has become a prime destination for adventure seekers. In an effort to boost local income and tourism, the district administration introduced bamboo rafting and kayaking activities. These thrilling experiences have quickly gained popularity, attracting tourists from far and wide. Visitors often express their joy upon reaching this scenic village, where the excitement of rafting and kayaking is matched only by the tranquility of the surroundings.

Empowered by Tourism and Forest Departments through training and capacity building, younger members from 40 families of the local Dhurwa Tribe offer kayaking, bamboo rafting and trekking activities.

Bastariya Cuisine and Homestay Experience

One of the highlights of visiting Dhudmaras is the opportunity to experience Bastariya culture firsthand through local cuisine and homestays. The homestays in the village are thoughtfully designed, offering guests a cozy and authentic experience. Visitors can savor traditional Bastariya dishes, which are prepared with local ingredients and showcase the rich culinary heritage of the region. Tourists frequently remark on the warmth of the local hospitality and the uniqueness of the home-cooked meals, making their visit even more memorable.

Residents of Dhudmaras offer homestays and other accommodation facilities, and also serve as guides, showing tourists around the area as well as offering traditional food, camping, trekking, and bird watching.

Development Plans: UN Team’s Visit for Enhancements

The recognition from the UN is only the beginning. According to Bastar’s district collector, members of the state administration and a UN team will visit Dhudmaras to explore ways to further develop the area. Their goal is to enhance infrastructure, improve security, and ensure that the village remains an attractive and safe destination for tourists. This initiative is expected to bring sustainable development to the region, benefiting both the local community and the tourism sector.

Region’s potential as a top-tier travel destination

The inclusion of Dhudmaras in the list of top global tourist destinations has added a new dimension to Bastar’s identity. Already home to iconic natural attractions like the Chitrakote and Tirathgarh waterfalls, Bastar’s tourism appeal has now expanded.
