MP Weather: Madhya Pradesh Braces for Severe Cold Wave from December 20, What IMD Has Said?

Madhya Pradesh is set to experience an intense cold spell starting December 20, which will extend through January. During this 40-day period, a cold wave is expected to grip the state for 20 to 22 days. The Ujjain and Gwalior-Chambal divisions are likely to face the harshest conditions due to the direct impact of cold winds from the north.

Record-Breaking Cold in November

November has already witnessed record-breaking cold temperatures. In Bhopal, a 36-year-old record was shattered, while cities like Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, and Gwalior recorded temperatures 7°C below normal. However, meteorologists predict the most severe cold will arrive in December.

December and January: Peak Cold Season

According to the Meteorological Department, December and January are historically the coldest months due to an influx of cold winds from North India. These winds cause a sharp drop in temperatures, with both day and night experiencing significant cooling.

Data from the past decade confirms this pattern, showing that the activation of Western Disturbances in December often results in "Mawtha" (winter rainfall), which further intensifies the cold even during the day.

La Niña Conditions May Develop In Early Dec

Weather scientist Dr. Singh has highlighted the role of La Niña in exacerbating the cold conditions this year. La Niña conditions are expected to develop in early December, leading to more severe cold in regions like Gwalior-Chambal and Bundelkhand. Both daytime and nighttime temperatures will drop considerably. The combination of strong Western Disturbances and cold northern winds is expected to create exceptionally cold conditions.

Coldest Regions in Madhya Pradesh

Several districts across the state are expected to experience extreme cold. The following areas will be most affected:

Gwalior, Chambal, and Ujjain Divisions: These regions will experience direct icy winds, making them the coldest in the state.

Sehore and Vidisha (Bhopal Division): Severe cold will grip these areas.

Niwari, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Panna (Sagar Division): These districts will face harsh cold conditions.

Mauganj, Sidhi, and Singrauli (Rewa Division): These regions will endure severe cold.

Mandla and Dindori (Jabalpur Division): These areas will experience intense cold.

Indore, Dhar, and Jhabua (Indore Division): These districts will also be severely cold.

Madhya Pradesh is on the brink of a prolonged and severe cold wave that will impact both rural and urban regions. Residents are advised to prepare for frigid temperatures, especially in districts like Ujjain, Gwalior, and Chambal, where the cold will be most intense. The combined effects of La Niña, Western Disturbances, and cold northern winds will make this winter particularly challenging.
