Benami Property Case: Within a day of being sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar secured significant legal relief. The Delhi-based Benami Property Tribunal ordered the release of properties worth Rs 1,000 crore that had been seized by the Income Tax Department.
Ajit Pawar took the oath of office as Deputy Chief Minister for the sixth time on December 5, and the tribunal issued its favorable order the very next day, December 6. This development marks a notable turn in the legal battle surrounding the high-value properties linked to the senior NCP leader.
I-T had seized properties of Ajit, wife & son
In the year 2021, the Income Tax Department had seized many properties of Ajit Pawar, his son Parth Pawar and wife Sumitra Pawar, accusing them of benami properties. The Income Tax Department had recovered documents during raids on several companies on 7 October 2021 and claimed that these documents are related to the benami properties of the Pawar family.
The Benami Prevention Appellate Tribunal (Tribunal) had earlier rejected the Income Tax Department's allegations. After this, the Income Tax Department appealed against this decision of the Tribunal. But on Friday (December 6), Delhi's Benami Property Tribunal Court rejected the Income Tax Department's appeal and ordered the release of Ajit Pawar's properties.
Big relief for Ajit Pawar
A Mahayuti government has been formed under the leadership of BJP in Maharashtra. Devendra Fadnavis took oath as Chief Minister for the third time, while Ajit Pawar and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde took oath as Deputy Chief Minister. Soon the departments will be distributed among the ministers. The Tribunal's decision is being considered a big relief for Ajit Pawar on both political and legal fronts.
