Famous film director Shyam Benegal has passed away. He was 90 years old. Sources from Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital have said that Benegal breathed his last on Monday evening.
Shyam Benegal's daughter Pia Benegal said that her father breathed his last on Monday evening at around 6:30 pm. Shyam Benegal was suffering from a serious kidney disease for the last two years.
Film director Benegal had celebrated his 90th birthday just a few days ago on 14 December. Actress Shabana Azmi, who started her career with Benegal's film 'Ankur', posted his birthday picture on X.
Started his film career with film Ankur
Benegal started his film career with his first film Ankur (1974), in which Anant Nag and Shabana Azmi played the lead roles. This film was well liked. His next film Nishant (1975) proved to be a turning point, which brought him recognition. The film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976.
Benegal directed several landmark films including Manthan, Bhumika, Market Place, Junoon, Zubeida, The Making of the Mahatma and Sardar Begum. His work not only shaped Indian cinema but also inspired several generations of filmmakers.
Honored with many awards
The filmmaker was honored with many awards during his career. He has received the Padma Shri in 1976, the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005. His death marks the end of an important chapter in the history of Indian film-making.
His films starring stars like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Girish Karnad introduced many people to the world of cinema. Benegal's work earned him a place among the finest filmmakers of India. Born on December 14, 1934 in Hyderabad, Benegal was the cousin of renowned actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt.
