The swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra's new government is scheduled for 5:30 pm at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Devendra Fadnavis will take the oath as Chief Minister, while Ajit Pawar is set to be sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. However, the event is clouded by uncertainty over Eknath Shinde’s participation.
Shinde’s Demand for Home Ministry
Shinde, the current Chief Minister, is reportedly demanding the influential Home Ministry portfolio, which the BJP is keen to retain. His reluctance to compromise has created tension within the alliance. Sources reveal that Shinde has remained incommunicado since the morning, further fueling speculation about his discontent.
Shinde’s Absence from NCP’s Invitation Card
Adding to the intrigue, the invitation card for the swearing-in ceremony mentions only Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, conspicuously omitting Shinde's name. This omission is seen as a clear signal of Shinde's dissatisfaction with the current power-sharing arrangement.
Shinde’s Supporters Rally to Persuade Him
Shinde’s loyalists, including MLAs from his faction, have gathered at the Varsha Bungalow in a bid to convince him to join the new cabinet. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat expressed confidence, saying, “Eknath Shinde will listen to our request. We want him to become the Deputy Chief Minister, and we are all united in persuading him.”
A Test of Political Unity
As the swearing-in approaches, all eyes are on Shinde’s next move. His decision will likely have significant implications for the stability of the newly formed government, marking a critical moment in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
