Punjab Mohali Building Collapse: Toll rises to two, many others still trapped


Punjab Building Collapse: A major accident occurred in Mohali, Punjab on Saturday due to the collapse of a six-storey building. After the incident, NDRF and Army teams are engaged in rescue operations here. Out of the 5 people buried under the debris, a girl was taken out and rushed to the hospital at night, but she could not be saved. The body of a man has also been recovered from the accident site on Sunday. Many other people are trapped in the debris of the building.


Drishti Verma, 20, a resident of Theog in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district, was pulled out by rescuers and later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.


The body of a man was recovered on Sunday, subdivisional magistrate Damandeep Kaur said, adding the victim has been identified as Abhishek Dhanwal, hailing from Ambala.


CM expresses grief


Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed grief over the accident and said that strict action has been ordered against the culprits. He has appealed to the people to cooperate with the administration. According to media reports, Mohali's Acting Deputy Commissioner Viraj S Tidarke said that the deceased girl Drishti Verma (20) was a resident of Theog in Himachal Pradesh. She was taken to the hospital in a critical condition, but the doctors could not save him.


Bhagwant Mann tweeted: A multi-storey building collapsed near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). Sad information has been received. The entire administration and other rescue teams were deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration. This accident happened in Mohali at 4:30 pm on Saturday evening. NDRF and Army teams remained busy clearing the debris throughout the night. For this, the help of JCB machines and other equipment is being taken. The difficulties in rescue have increased due to waterlogging on the site. A team of doctors and experts is also present on the spot.


People were in the gym on the third floor of the building


The gym trainer, who narrowly escaped the accident, said that there was a gym on three floors of the building, while people lived on rent on the upper two floors. At the time of the accident, few people were present in the gym. On Sunday, a woman reached the spot looking for her husband. Her husband had come to the gym and her phone is switched off since the accident.


Foundation had weakened


Punjab Police has registered a case against building owners Parvinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh. SSP Deepak Pareek said that an FIR has been registered against both of them under sections of negligence including unintentional murder. According to local people, the collapsed building was about 10 years old. Excavation of the basement was going on next to it, due to which the foundation of the building weakened and this accident happened.
