Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state from January next year. During the meeting of the Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) in Dehradun, Dhami said that as per its resolution, the state government has completed its 'homework' towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code and it will be enforced in the entire state from January 2025.
First state to implement
With this, Uttarakhand will also become the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code after independence. On the last day of campaigning for the assembly elections held in the year 2022, the CM had promised the people of Uttarakhand that if his party retains power, UCC will be implemented in the state.
CM Dhami said that after the formation of the new government in Uttarakhand in March 2022, in the first cabinet meeting itself, it was decided to constitute an expert committee to implement the UCC in the state. He said that in this sequence, a five-member expert committee was constituted under the chairmanship of retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, on the basis of whose report the Uniform Civil Code Bill-2024 was passed in the state assembly on February 7, 2024.
UCC will give a new direction to the society: CM
Dhami also said that after obtaining the assent of President Draupadi Murmu on the bill, its notification was issued on March 12, 2024. He said that now the rules of the Uniform Civil Code Act have also been prepared and Uttarakhand is fully prepared to implement UCC from January.
CM Dhami said on the matter that, "Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code will give a new direction to the society by implementing the basic spirit of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and Sabka Vishwas'. This law will open new doors for empowerment of women and children especially of Devbhoomi."
