An American Airlines aircraft collided with a Black Hawk helicopter in mid-air near Washington, D.C. The plane, a Bombardier CRJ 700, was en route from Washington to Kansas, carrying 64 people, including 60 passengers and four crew members.
Authorities have reported that 18 bodies have been recovered so far. Following the collision, the plane reportedly broke into two pieces and fell into the Potomac River, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations in the area.
The incident occurred at approximately 9 PM local time, close to Reagan Washington National Airport, where the plane had just taken off. In response to the accident, an emergency response team has been deployed, including over 10 ambulances and support vehicles. Reagan Airport announced on social media platform X that all flights have been temporarily halted.
The Black Hawk helicopter involved in the incident belonged to the U.S. Army and had three soldiers on board. While a military officer confirmed that no senior officers were on the helicopter, the condition of the soldiers remains unclear. The helicopter took off from Fort Belvoir in Virginia, located southwest of the airport.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated, "I have received full information about the accident that took place at Reagan National Airport. I am keeping an eye on the situation. May God give peace to the souls of those who lost their lives in this accident."
