Court to deliver verdict today in RG Kar Doctor Rape Murder Case

The much-awaited verdict in the rape and murder case of a doctor posted on duty at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital will be pronounced on Saturday. There was anger and resentment across the country over this case and there were long protests against it across the country.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah Court completed the hearing on this case on January 9 and the verdict will be pronounced on Saturday.

Sanjay Roy, who worked as a civil volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested as an accused in the RG Kar case. Sanjay Roy was accused of raping a woman doctor posted on duty at the hospital on August 9 last year and brutally killing the doctor after the rape.

Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy on August 10 itself. Initially, the case was investigated by the Kolkata Police, but later on the instructions of the Calcutta High Court, its investigation was handed over to the CBI. The CBI has demanded death penalty for Sanjay Roy, accused in the case. The court will pronounce its verdict on Saturday, 57 days after the trial began in the court.

There was anger across the country

The hearing in the doctor's rape and murder case began on November 12 and during this time 50 witnesses were questioned. The victim's parents have suspected the involvement of other people in the crime and have demanded in the court that the matter be investigated in more detail. Anger and resentment was seen across the country over the RG Kar hospital incident.

Protests, marches and rallies were organized

During this time, protests, marches and rallies were organized at various places in the country. There was a lot of politics on this issue and opposition parties BJP and CPI(M) tried to corner the TMC government for this heinous crime. However, non-political movements demanding justice for the victim were more visible, in which common citizens played an important role.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder case in RG Kar Hospital, the Supreme Court had constituted a National Task Force (NTF) to suggest a protocol for the safety of doctors and other medical professionals across the country. The NTF had filed a report in the Supreme Court in November last year.
